1) Acute Care. Due to the nature of the work, an acute care travel physical therapist will always be in demand. As an acute care travel physical therapist, you care for individuals for short-term patients who are admitted to a hospital for reasons such as illness, accident, or recovering from trauma. Due to the responsibilities of a travel physical therapist in an acute care setting, there will always be a demand for this role.
2) Skilled Nursing Facility. Working in a skilled nursing facility requires a physical therapist to care for elderly patients in long-term nursing care. As the national median age continues to rise, more and more people will be in need of long-term care.
3) Outpatient Clinic. People with musculoskeletal or other join tissue issues visit outpatient clinics or private practice. This setting takes places in a clinic, office, or other health care facility. Some common issues people go to an outpatient clinic is for arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or tendonitis. As more people spend time glued to their devices or type on a keyboard, outpatient clinics will continue to be in demand.
4) Wellness. This setting is all about preventing/rehabilitating injury and promoting a healthy lifestyle. People are becoming more health conscious. Thus, a need for physical therapists who work in fitness centers or sports training facility will be in need.
5) Home Health. A growing trend in the industry is home health. While it isn’t new by any stretch of the imagination, home health physical therapists provide care in the patient’s place of residence. Most home health physical therapists are treating either pediatric or senior patients. These patients can be treated for a variety of reasons but majority are similar things you would find in an acute care or skilled nursing facility.
6) Hospice. This is one of those settings that not a lot of people want to get into. That is part of the reason why it is in demand. You care for patients in the last phase of an incurable disease. You are responsible for help patients maintain their functional abilities and manage pain for as long as possible.
7) Local, State, and Federal Government. Since the government isn’t going anywhere, neither is the need to care for these individuals. Physical therapists in this setting could work for places like Veteran’s Health Administration and the Department of Defense. The responsibilities that a physical therapist will do in this setting are like some of the ones listed above, you are just working in a different setting.
